Challenges

  • Develop small learning communities to support academy approach to instruction
  • Create energy-efficient building that lowers operating costs and removes barriers to learning

Design Highlights

The school is arranged as a series of four self-contained academic neighborhoods. Extended learning areas, located at the center of each neighborhood, act as "living rooms" for the academies. Operable walls connect each extended learning area with surrounding classrooms, allowing the entire space to be configured for large-group presentations. Thurgood Marshall features more than twice the number of windows mandated by state guidelines. A variable air volume system and central thermal ice storage system are expected to reduce heating and cooling costs by 20%.
