Break down the scale of a 1,200-student middle school to create intimate learning environments
Support a team teaching approach to education
Provide amenities that go beyond the usual middle school model
Design Highlights
The design creates "communities within communities" by breaking down each 400-student academic house into smaller teams of 130. Centrally located computer labs and project rooms encourage collaboration and group study, while an exploratory wing houses technology and production labs that are not usually found in a middle school environment. Shared facilities include three gymnasiums, a fitness room, a 550-seat auditorium, and a vibrant cafeteria. The conceptual model established by this award-winning design was duplicated through additions/renovations to the district's two existing middle schools.
