Challenges

  • Support team teaching approach to middle school education
  • Share constricted site with new elementary school
  • Promote wayfinding on shared site

Design Highlights

The new Hyatts Middle School is part of an educational campus that also includes the new Liberty Tree Elementary School. Rather than orienting the buildings on opposite ends of the site, a unique design links Hyatts and Liberty Tree via a six-classroom connector that can be used as shared instructional space. Dramatic entry points, massing techniques, and exterior materials create a distinct identity for each building and assist in wayfinding. Inside Hyatts, individual learning communities support a team teaching philosophy, while shared-use areas include specialty labs, the media center, a flexible dining commons, and a competition gymnasium.
