Phelps High School Selected for AASA Citation (02/26/09)

Fanning Howey has been notified by the American Association of School Administrators (AASA) that the Phelps Architecture, Engineering and Construction High School, Washington, D.C., was one of nine projects chosen by the jury as a citation winner. The jury was comprised of members from AASA, the American Institute of Architects (AIA), and the Council of Educational Facility Planners International (CEFPI). Jury members praised the project, saying that the design, “Transformed an abandoned school building into a high tech, project based high school program preparing students for the fields of engineering, design, and construction.”

Designed by Fanning Howey’s Washington, D.C. office, in conjunction with Bryant Mitchell Architects, the building incorporates both advanced technology as well as traditional, hands-on skill development, with sophisticated energy monitoring tools, a welding laboratory, and heavy equipment simulators. “This futuristic school marks the launch of a new era of high-tech construction instruction in the District," noted Mayor Adrian M. Fenty. "Phelps graduates can look forward to well-paying jobs that can't be outsourced and trades that can never be taken away."
