Challenges

  • Upgrade building systems within 100-year-old high school
  • Preserve character of landmark, which is on the National Register of Historic Places

Design Highlights

Built in 1906, Hughes Center has all the features of a historic high school: grandeur, character...and outdated building systems. A $34 million renovation project is bringing this 100-year-old building into the 21st century by providing the latest in HVAC equipment and electrical systems. Renovations will add air-conditioning for the first time, and a new VAV system will replace the aging steam radiators found throughout the building. Enhanced lighting systems and controls will reduce overall energy usage. All work is being completed with an eye toward preserving the character of the Hughes Center.
