Challenges

  • Minimize energy costs for the new 362,000-square-foot high school
  • Reduce first costs, as well as long-term operating costs

Design Highlights

Heat recovery wheels built into 10 of 13 air-handling units allowed the client to downsize boilers and chillers in Northville High School, providing a 25% savings in overall energy costs. Heat recovery wheels transfer water molecules from one air stream to another, using latent heat from indoors to preheat outdoor air required for ventilation. In the past, schools using heat recovery wheels faced high initial equipment and installation costs. However, in the case of Northville High School, the savings gained by downsizing boilers and chillers more than offset the initial costs.
