Challenges

  • Create an anchor within a developing urban campus
  • Provide a crossroads for academic and social life

Design Highlights

Located on a campus with a large population of commuters and other non-traditional students, the Calvin English Library provides much needed research and meeting space. The entry-level floor conveniently connects to the University's student center, while a mix of casual and traditional seating provides students with ample opportunity to gather in small groups. On the western façade, grade is sculpted away, allowing a three-story glass wall to bring natural light into the lower floor. The glass façade creates a strong visual presence on campus, identifying Calvin English as a center of academic and social life.
