Challenges

  • Create a "community living room" in the heart of downtown Dearborn Heights, Michigan
  • Provide a variety of spaces for socialization, reading, studying, and community use

Design Highlights

Caroline Kennedy Public Library is the community living room for residents of Dearborn Heights. Comfortable seating around a central fireplace allows the lobby to function as a gathering place during the day. After hours, patrons can access the Community Program Room for various meetings and events. The main lobby provides views of the outdoor reading terrace. A central passage with high, wood ceilings and clerestory windows connects the youth, young adult, and adult areas. Alcove seating and private windowed rooms offer ample space for reading and studying.
