Challenges

  • Complete a thorough needs assessment of the System's Main Library, a 1950s building designed by renowned architect, Marcel Breuer
  • Develop options that address programmatic needs and connect the library to nearby commercial and residential properties

Highlights

Designed by Marcel Breuer and constructed in 1953, the Grosse Pointe Central Library represents a classic piece of mid-century architecture. When an initial building assessment showed that the library was undersized by nearly 20,000 square feet, Fanning Howey helped the client explore renovation/expansion and new construction options, both on the existing site and on nearby properties. Each option focused on establishing the library as a "destination" that would encourage foot traffic near local businesses.
