Challenges

  • Create a modern iCommons within the 50-year-old library
  • Meet the learning needs of today and tomorrow’s students
  • Adapt design to the very high ceilings, vast amount of wall space, and multiple computers currently placed in hard wired rows

Design Highlights

As part of the Library Journal’s Design Institute, Fanning Howey teamed with Saint Louis University to explore conceptual designs that would create a futuristic space in the existing library. As imagined, the iCommons would support the learning habits of the next generation of students, with a focus on technology and flexibility of space. One popular aspect of the design is the outdoor information commons situated along a major pedestrian pathway. The space would provide a place to "see and be seen," while supporting group work, individual study, and research.
