Challenges

  • Enhance connections between the library and the surrounding wooded site
  • Minimize the building's impact on the environment
  • Create an open and warm environment that encourages intergenerational socialization

Design Highlights

Milford Public Library is designed to celebrate nature. A series of stone columns topped with laminated southern yellow pines form a "tree line" that bisects the open floor plan. Flooring and finishes incorporate indigenous materials such as slate, wood, and stone. In addition to celebrating nature, the library helps sustain it. A "green" approach to landscaping gathers storm water, filters it, and discharges it back into the surrounding wetlands. Native plants and grasses reduce maintenance needs and create a strong link between the library and the park setting.
