2006 Master Facilities Plan, District of Columbia Public Schools
Image

Challenges

  • Create a dynamic master plan to align facilities with the district's Master Education Plan
  • Identify alternative uses for more than 3 million square feet of underutilized space
  • Develop community support for the overall master plan

Highlights

A comprehensive master planning effort analyzed every facility within the District of Columbia Public Schools, including 147 school buildings. The planning team provided complete demographic assessments and analyzed key issues such as the development of public/private partnerships and the current underutilization of school facilities. The resulting master plan outlined a strategy for “rightsizing” more than 3 million square feet of facilities space and recommended a 15-year Capital Improvement Program. An intensive engagement effort, including dozens of public meetings and the development of a customized Web site, focused on building support for the long-range plan.
