Challenges

  • Create high-end recreation and fitness facilities within an existing high school
  • Support use by students and local residents who purchase memberships just like a traditional fitness center

Design Highlights

An innovative partnership between Medina City Schools and the City of Medina resulted in the addition of a 105,000-square-foot recreation center to the existing Medina High School. The recreation center serves both students and local residents and includes a leisure pool, competition pool, field house, walking/jogging track, and fitness center. An additional partnership with Medina General Hospital provides residents with health and wellness education and physical rehabilitation programs on-site. Students benefit through consultation with hospital staff on health and fitness issues, as well as access to hospital-owned equipment and information resources.
